About
My Style
Sessions are collaborative. Together we explore the good reasons for getting together as well as how we will know our work together is complete.
Before Our First Session
My focus is on helping professionals of all kinds learn a different way of thinking and working with clients. . . one that instills a deep sense of hope and respect for each and every individual. SFBT is much more than a therapeutic model, but is a powerful way of thinking and working with people from all walks of life.
I Am Best With
Solution-Focused Brief Practice is best understood as a language. My passion is working with professionals (regardless of their field of expertise) to help them connect with their clients/customers to make a profound impact. This includes agencies as well as individuals. My specialty is connecting with people who are struggling with some of the most challenging situations; court mandated, chronic mental illness, substance-misuse, chronic medical issues, school issues, employer-based issues, family stress, etc.
Referrals Welcome
I work with professionals and agencies around the world both via Zoom as well as in-person. I provide a variety of educational courses on Solution-Focused Brief Therapy through www.denversolutions.com as well as create tailored classes to address client and administrative issues. All services count toward international certification as a Solution-Focused Practitioner through the International Alliance of Solution-Focused Teaching Institutes (IASTI). I also welcome people who want to experience the model itself through life coaching and therapy.
I Refer Out For
I am a licensed therapist in Colorado, USA. As such, I can only offer therapy services to those who live in Colorado.
Outside the Practice
I have been a dog lover since the age of two. I share my home with a border collie, Socrates (Sokz), and a Rough Coat Collie, Tesslyn. And. . . I've been in a relationship with an amazing human for close to 30 years. As a Coloradan, time outside in nature is precious and healing. Sunsets, flowers, watching the deer and elk in the back field, and quiet walks with my family keep me grounded. And chocolate.
What Shaped My Practice
I was originally trained as a drug and alcohol counselor back in the late ‘80s. I chose this profession because I had a passion for helping people, and I’ve always wanted to push myself to be the best at whatever I do. Learning to work with those who struggle with addiction seemed like the perfect fit to hone my skills due to the inherent challenges and complex problems that come with addiction. However, I soon became disillusioned with this field. In my searching for a better way of working with clients, I met Insoo Kim Berg and Steve de Shazer (the founders of Solution-Focused Brief Therapy) in 1992 and ultimately learned the art of using this evidenced-based model. Watching them work was inspirational. Clients who were angry, resentful, mandated into treatment, etc., transformed within minutes into motivated clients who readily identified strategies for lasting change. I knew then, that it was possible to maintain one’s passion for helping others and to leave a work day energized and hopeful. I was blessed to work with Insoo, Steve, and many other mentors for the next decade, and it is because of them that I not only remain in the mental health field, but that I’m still passionate about my work. In order to make the most difference in the world in whatever time I'm gifted on this planet, my primary focus is on teaching and coaching professionals in the effective use of this amazing model. I continue to work with clients directly as well.
